Chomping at the Bit

Ah, one of my all-time pet peeves. Too often, people use words as they think they should be used, without thinking about what they actually mean. Eggcorns tackles the problem with its database of misused words, citing at the very top of its page an error that I've seen three times in the last week--"free reign" for "free rein." Drives me crazy! A few others: "tow the line," "cut to the cheese," and "up to stuff." A fun site for all editors and lovers of language. Yes, I'm mocking the issue with the title.
