Well, There's Something in These Names

Lynneguist at Separated by a Common Language has given me an excuse to mention the offbeat Utah Baby Namer, run by Wes Clark. No, not THAT Wes Clark, another one.

Lynnguist examines the differences between British and American English. Most recently, she notices how some names, such as Clay or Nancy, clearly tag their owners by origin, even though the names could well be used by other English-speaking citizens.

If you're interested in naming issues, try AOL's Baby Naming Help.

I'm watching for TV sportscasters to continue their newly acquired British preference for such usage as "England are" and "sent off" and "nil," picked up during World Cup coverage.
