'Person of Interest'

"Person of Interest" is one of those phrases that damned near drives me insane. What does it mean? It appears to be a way of naming someone as a suspect without quite going through the legal niceties of officially suspecting him. For example:

'Person of Interest’ Is Named in California Wildfire Case

A fifth firefighter died on Tuesday as a result of the Esperanza wildfire that blackened more than 60 square miles of southern California last week, and a man was taken into police custody for questioning about the start of the blaze.

Pablo Cerda, 23, who was burned over 90 percent of his body and had extensive internal injuries, was taken off life support at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center after his family decided against further treatment for his damaged skin.

“One deciding factor from the family was that he had a severe burn on his vocal cords,” said Dr. Dev Gnanadev, a physician at the hospital. “His airway passages were completely burned. So even if Pablo made it, we’re not sure what kind of quality of life he would have had.”

Police in Riverside County, the site of last week’s fire, said they had arrested Raymond Lee Oyler, 37, in connection with two other wildfires earlier this summer, and said he was a “person of interest” in the Esperanza blaze.
